Green Power Market Development Group - Europe: Corporate Case Studies

European corporations are increasingly using renewable energy resources for their electricity and thermal energy needs. Members of the Green Power Market Development Group-Europe are leading this charge, switching to renewable energy to stabilize energy costs, reduce emissions, and strengthen stakeholder relations. Several examples of projects completed by Group members include Nike CSC's on-site wind park, DuPont's use of combined heat and power from biomass, Johnson & Johnson's use of geothermal heating and cooling and biomass-fired boiler, BT's on-site solar and wind systems, and Tetra Pak's purchases of green power. These are available in an easy-to-use reference guide here, as well as individually from links below.

"BT's On-Site Solar and Wind Systems: Learning By Doing"

BT installed a hybrid solar and wind system at its Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station in Cornwall, United Kindom in January 2006. By installing the system at the Goonhilly Visitor's Center, BT has gained valuable experience with the technology and has taken advantage of the location's visibility to increase awareness of its corporate environmental targets.

"Johnson & Johnson's New Wood Chip Boiler: A Successful Switch to Biomass"

Johnson & Johnson installed a new biomass-fired boiler at its Schaffhausen, Switzerland, location in January 2006. Integrated into a newly built Logistics Center, the wood-chip fired 350 kW system provides renewable heating for the warehouse facility and helps the company reduce its carbon footprint, stabilize its costs, and strengthen stakeholder relations.

"Nike CSC's On-Site Wind Park"

In June, 2006, Nike Customer Service Center (CSC) started receiving electricity from a 9 megawatt (MW) wind power park located on its Laakdal, Belgium facility, making it one of the largest corporate on-site wind power projects in Europe. Nike CSC is one of the first European corporate facilities of its size to be powered by 100 percent green electricity. Nike CSC was also able to employ an innovative financing approach which makes the green power purchase agreement at least cost neutral relative to conventional power contracts.

"Tetra Pak: Purchasing Green Power to Reduce Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions"

Learn how international packaging material manufacturing company Tetra Pak is purchasing green power to help meet its voluntary corporate greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.

"DuPont's Hamm-Uentrop Facility: An Innovative Approach to Implementing CHP Biomass"

DuPont's plant in Uentrop, Germany, developed an innovative partnership and financing arrangement to replace its old, inefficient gas-fired boilers with an efficient biomass cogeneration system that uses locally sourced woodchips as fuel.

"DuPuy (Johnson & Johnson): Using Geothermal Energy for Heating and Cooling"

DePuy, a business unit of global healthcare company Johnson & Johnson, manufactures orthopedic surgical supplies and appliances. In 2000, DePuy France moved to its new headquarters and distribution center in St. Priest (Lyon), France. Located 130 meters above an underground lake, the facility has a central heating and air conditioning system that uses a two-way water/water-type geothermal heat exchange pump that operates "hot" during the winter and "cold" during the summer.
